I recently found a condo that I could afford in Lynn. It needed work but my son in law was willing do most of it for me. I loved the area, the charm, the yard, the fireplace and the square footage.

A house inspection turned up, as in so many old houses in my price range, the "horrors of the basement" which in this case included asbestos draping from hot water pipes. We decided to make abatement of the asbestos part of the deal. The owner would have to have it removed professionally and then pay for an air test to make sure that the asbestos no longer posed a health hazard. This would have cost the owner about $1500, maybe a little more or less.

The owner did not want to pay a certified professional so he had "a friend" remove the asbestos and then refused to pay for the air test most likely knowing that the asbestos would now be airborne and an even more serious hazard because it was improperly removed.

I have kids in their twenties and precious young grandchildren and since I did not want to expose them to asbestos related Mesothelioma, I had to opt out of the deal.

Now I am back to the MLS listings and see nothing comparable in my price range. Pretty discouraging, this home search because there are so few affordable options.

Asbestos isn't cheap to get disposed of professionally. I can't even imagine what this guy's "friend" did with it.

Glad to hear you walked away from it. Smile

I'd report them to the Health Department & State EPA.
If a friend did it on the cheap, I'd question if the friend was licensed and how the asbestos was disposed of.

There is a building in LA that you can buy for a dollar- no joke- the problem is that it's a super fund site due to the asbestos problem.

I certainly do intend to report them however my realtor suggested that I wait until I get my $500 deposit back. It would be nice if I could get back the $300 that I spent for the house inspection but that seems pretty much impossible.

The sleazy (and stupid) owner will surely not disclose the asbestos to new prospective buyers who will be unaware that there had been asbestos. invisible but now airborne. The people who bought the second floor are probably unaware of what has gone on in the basement. They need to be informed as well.

A large condo near the beach with a fenced in yard would be attractive to a couple with young children and I don't want anyone to be at risk for lung cancer. I most assuredly will inform the city of Lynn and whomever else I need to contact. The owners will be forced to pay for an air test. I was told that if the asbestos is airborne the house could be condemned. God only knows, the asbestos could be sitting in a garbage can somewhere.
