The market is doing just that. The government can only hurt the independent guys - banks will always be able to survive. I think everything you've said is right. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on one's perspective), education is a continuous proces and even advisers must educate themselves. If they stand still their skills become obsolete very quickly, since there is always new research and new products. Unfortunately too many advisers simply decide to compensate their lack of skills and knowledge with products which are just a way to defer responsibility to banks and other institutions without doing their due diligence (i.e. for commission/fees), and we know how that turns out. Advisers can not blame the market. They have to blame themselves, because they must know from the current research that the market is not their friend. There is no excuse for incompetence.
